Fraud

What is fraud? How do you know if you’ve been defrauded?

Fraud happens more often than you think.

Fraud basically refers to a statement, or omission, by someone with the intent to mislead you. Essentially, it’s a lie.

A lie made in a statement, whether written or oral, is called a misrepresentation.

A lie by omission is called silent fraud. Silent fraud occurs in a truthful conversation when facts that should be made known were not disclosed by the party who was aware of those facts. Had you known those facts, you would have acted differently. If someone intended for that to happen to you, then that is silent fraud.

Fraud is most prevalent in business transactions that do not involve a bank or institutional lending.
